Essential Tips for Your 30-Day Bulgarian Trip:
Transport: Buses (various private companies, check Avtogari.info/BGrazpisanie) are extensive and often faster/more direct than trains for many routes. Trains (BDZ) connect major cities but can be slower. Renting a car offers maximum flexibility, especially for Rhodopes, Balkan Mountains villages, Black Sea coast, and accessing trailheads – drive on the RIGHT. Buy an electronic vignette for highways.
Accommodation: Good range: Hotels, guesthouses (kashta za gosti), apartments, hostels, mountain huts (hizha). Very affordable compared to Western Europe. Book ahead for Black Sea coast (summer), Bansko (winter ski season), and popular spots.
Language: Bulgarian is the official language (Slavic language using Cyrillic alphabet). English is spoken increasingly in Sofia, tourist centres, Black Sea resorts, and by younger people, but less common in rural areas. Learning the Cyrillic alphabet is helpful for reading signs. Basic Bulgarian phrases (Dobar den - Good day, Blagodarya - Thank you, Molya - Please, Izvinete - Excuse me) are highly appreciated. Russian might be understood by some older people.
Currency: Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Euro is NOT generally accepted (except maybe some tourist spots at poor rates). Cards widely accepted in cities/towns, ATMs common. Carry cash for smaller villages, markets, some guesthouses, entrance fees, taxis.
Food & Drink: Delicious and hearty. Shopska salad, Tarator (cold cucumber soup), Kebapche/Kyufte (grilled minced meat), Kavarma (pork/chicken stew), Banitsa (cheese pastry), Lutenitsa (pepper/tomato relish). Excellent local yogurt (kiselo mlyako). Good local beers (Zagorka, Kamenitza). Rakia (fruit brandy) is popular. Bulgarian wine is improving greatly (Mavrud, Melnik, Gamza reds; Dimyat, Misket whites).
Safety: Generally safe. Take standard precautions against petty theft in crowded areas/public transport. Be aware of taxi scams (use reputable apps/call companies). Hiking requires standard mountain safety precautions.
Booking Ahead: Recommended for popular accommodation (esp. summer coast/winter ski), specific tours (Rila Monastery, Danube Delta if extending), potentially train tickets for specific seats/routes, and key sites like Parliament (Bucharest) or Peles Castle (Romania guide context, applies less here but still good practice for popular spots).
Cyrillic Alphabet: Familiarizing yourself with Cyrillic letters will significantly help with reading signs (town names, stations, menus). Many signs also have Latin transliteration, but not always.
Приятно пътуване! Have an absolutely fantastic 30-day adventure discovering the wonders of Bulgaria!
