Essential Tips for Your 30-Day Icelandic Trip:

  • BOOK EVERYTHING IN ADVANCE: This cannot be stressed enough. Accommodation (especially outside Reykjavík), rental cars (essential!), popular tours (Blue Lagoon, glacier walks, ice caves, whale watching, Silfra) get booked up months ahead, especially for summer.

  • Cost: Iceland is very expensive. Budget generously for accommodation, food, fuel, tours. Save money by using supermarkets (Bonus, Kronan) for picnics/some meals, cooking in guesthouses/apartments, bringing a reusable water bottle (tap water is excellent). Alcohol is extremely pricey (buy at duty-free on arrival if desired).

  • Rental Car: Essential for this itinerary. 4x4 highly recommended for gravel roads (common off Route 1), Westfjords, and essential for F-roads (Highlands - summer only, specific insurance needed) and potentially winter driving. Understand Icelandic road signs and driving rules (lights on always, speed limits, single-lane bridges). Check road.is frequently for conditions/closures. Be aware of sheep on roads!

  • Weather & Packing: Expect any weather, anytime. Pack layers: waterproof/windproof outer shell (jacket AND pants), fleece/wool mid-layers, thermal base layers, hat, gloves, scarf – even in summer. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are crucial. Sunscreen/sunglasses needed due to reflection. Eye mask for Midnight Sun (summer).

  • Safety: Weather changes rapidly. Check forecasts before any hike/activity. Inform someone of your plans. Stay on marked paths. Be extremely careful near coastlines (sneaker waves at Reynisfjara!), geothermal areas (boiling water/mud), and glaciers. Emergency number is 112. Download the 112 Iceland app.

  • Northern Lights / Midnight Sun: Northern Lights are typically visible Sept-Apr (dark, clear nights needed). Midnight Sun occurs May-Aug (longest days Jun/Jul). Plan accordingly.

  • Language: Icelandic is the official language. English proficiency is exceptionally high across the country.

  • Currency: Icelandic Króna (ISK). Credit/debit cards are widely accepted almost everywhere, but having a small amount of cash can be useful occasionally.

Farðu vel! Have an absolutely incredible and unforgettable 30-day adventure exploring the wonders of Iceland!
